With so many varieties of hybrid seed at a grower’s fingertips, selecting the right one is easier said than done. Keep these hybrid selection tips in mind when considering what’s right for you!

Soil Types: Maximum performance depends immensely on making sure your seed fits with the acres where it is planted. Which means understanding how a hybrid or variety performs with the soil on your farm is critical. Most seed products are developed through vigorous research to determine how they will respond to different soil types. We will ask you several questions concerning the fields you plan to plant for this reason.

Traits: Part of seed selection is determining the insects or weed pressure the hybrid will encounter on your acres. Do you have corn rootworm? Do you need a select herbicide for rescue treatments? Do you have sudden death syndrome (SDS) or nematodes? Answering questions about environmental pressures is essential.

Disease Package: Just as hybrids and varieties are selected through research for soil types, they are also researched to determine how they perform when certain diseases are or may become present. Knowing what diseases are common for your area is key to choosing hybrids that have disease tolerance to minimize disease risk.

Yield Goals: Select seed products that have the right traits to perform best in your growing conditions. Some “racehorse products” can deliver outstanding yield when grown under the perfect field conditions. However, if you have environmental challenges or pest pressures, selections should be based on the variety’s ability to perform on your acres to realize maximum yield potential.

Convenience: Sometimes picking the hybrid comes down to just plain old convenience. By that, I mean planting a specific hybrid on a farm that you want to harvest first or last. It could be planting a hybrid that comes in bulk or certain seed sizes that work better in your planter. Picking a product that just makes your life easier is also something to consider.

As you can see, there are a lot of factors that go into selecting the right seed for your farm. The great part about working with Two Rivers Cooperative is that you don’t have to go it alone. Our team is here to help find the perfect seed for your acres no matter what your needs might be!
